An Angry Storm

Nancy shot her friends a warning look. She couldn’t wait to talk over this discovery about Mike, but she wanted to do it in private.

Rising quickly to her feet, Nancy said, “Thank you very much for your time, Mrs. Norris.”

“My pleasure.” Mrs. Norris stood up also and led the way to the front door. “Please don’t forget to come by with that diary,” she told Bess.

The girls promised Mrs. Norris they’d return as soon as possible and said goodbye.

Bess grabbed Nancy’s arm as they went down the snowy front walk. “Did you hear what she said about Vera’s helper?” Without waiting for an answer, she added, “Mike has to be the one who’s after the money, right?”

Nancy took a few more steps down the walk before answering. “Maybe. But I’m still not convinced. If Mike stole the trunks, why did Roz try to keep George and me from looking at that black trunk we saw in her office yesterday?”

“Speaking of the black trunk,” George said, “shouldn’t we go back to Roz’s and try to get a second look at it?”

“Definitely,” Nancy told her. “But before we do that, I want to go to the newspaper office and read up on Zach Caulder’s murder.”

“Do you want Bess and me to go with you?” George asked as Nancy pulled the newspaper office’s address from her purse.

Nancy thought for a moment. “No. Why don’t you guys go back to show Mrs. Norris Zach’s diary? She seems to know a lot about the area. Maybe she can tell you something that will help us figure out who might be after Zach’s money chest.”

The office of the White Falls Gazette was located in a brick building just off Main Street. Inside, a dark-haired young man behind the information desk led Nancy through the bustling newsroom to a small office at the rear of the building.

“These are the Gazette’s archives,” he told her, gesturing around the windowless room. “We’ve got back issues on microfilm going back to 1898, when the paper started up.”

Nancy saw that file cabinets stretched along two walls of the room, while a third wall contained shelves piled high with old copies of the Gazette. Next to the door was a table with two microfilm machines on it.

She remembered the date of the last entry in Zach Caulder’s diary, so she asked to see the microfilm for the second half of that year.

“You’re all set,” the young man told her a few minutes later, after loading the microfilm. “If you’d like to make a copy of anything, just push this.” He pointed to a button on the side of the machine. “Give a yell when you’re done.”

Once he had left, Nancy turned to the lighted monitor, and the front page of the July first issue stared back at her. She quickly ran the microfilm through until she got to August first, then checked each daily headline. She paused just long enough to make sure there was no news of Zach Caulder’s murder before shooting the film ahead to the next day.
